The Way, the truth and The Life

Jesus as the way, the truth and the life…
Christianity is centered in who Jesus is (that’s what makes it a unique religion): The Way, The Truth, and The Life-as He called Himself. He claimed to contain all three. The way of life, the truth about life and the life force to live well—i.e. according to His Ways or Nature.
I think each people group or culture tends to emphasize one of these three areas of God—the way, the truth, or the life. They tend to meet God as the principles of being or way (the Tao—more eastern); the truths about what is Real (the greek and roman mindset we inherited in the West); or the Energy of life force of living (perhaps body oriented cultures, even aboriginal and first nations peoples)—how to really live out your ethics or best ideals.
So Jesus was claiming to be: the path of how to live, the truth about what life is, and the energy to live it correctly, empowering our ethics through the gift of His Own Holy Spirit, which are based on the law of Love—love God and love others.
We, as followers in union with Him, claim that through union with His Nature and death to ourselves, we find true Life, even our true selves, and get better at loving Him and one another. Our ethics get empowered through His Spirit and formation of His Life in us. We start to grow in the way, the truth and the Life aspects of who He is.
We lose ourselves into Him to find the way, the truth and the life in Him. That’s Christianity in a nutshell—that Christ is the way, the truth and the life to live it!
As we enter into Him, ever more deeply, we grow in all three! And can start to love into cultures which emphasize one of these aspects of His Identity! He is the way to live, the truths about what is, and the energy and life to align with what is real life! That’s what we believe. And that is the journey we are on, as true believers.

Teach and prophecy, but know the difference!

Teach and prophecy, but know the difference when you are doing each. God is a God of order. Some can both teach and prophecy, but know when you are doing each, so you plant His Seeds well. And distinguish them for others, so there is clarity of reception.

Know when you switch into prophetic mode. It’s a different energy in His Spirit. It has a unique potency and urgency, and force—it cuts through things. When teaching, there is expanded time, and walking things out, to show how, to bring order to the minds of His People. They are each unique. Know which is which, even when discerning the opinions of others. Notice what is real teaching, and what is real prophetic. Distinguish the modes of communication as a way of getting to know God and His Ways.

Of course, the two modes of Divine discourse overlap, yet they are distinct in Him. Learn the difference, so you can see how and why He is using that method or mode of communication into the situation. MLK for instance, was sometimes teaching, and other times, clearly prophesying! You can sense the difference in his speeches! Jesus also often did both, in one conversation, yet you can clearly sense when He switches from one to the other. This is a helpful and needed part of discernment in our times!

His Sheep know His Voice, and that not all aspects of His Voice are the same. His sheep also know how to discern His Voice from the world’s voices. That much is basic to spiritual survival! God often communicates in times of great change, as He is now; so let us discern His Voice, and His modes of communication today. This will more succinctly lead us to live in His Ways!

Learning to discern

Simple tests…His Thoughts, versus ours. How to tell the difference.
One way to discern our best thoughts from His is their tone. The words of God always lead into the Ways of God! Does this idea lead into His Ways? This is one key. Another is, His thoughts are higher than ours, so often surprise even our most enlightened thoughts. There is an inner shock of sorts, when we hear God’s words. They surprise even our highest intelligence. And they lead into His Tone of Being, the architecture of Him. They have His patterns in them.
We often are not aware or unable to divide or discern between our soul’s thoughts and His Spirit’s thoughts. It’s a helpful practice to notice the difference. His thoughts are higher than ours, so look for where we are surprised by an idea, and if it leads us into Him and His Ways. There are very enlightened soul thoughts, which are still not His Thoughts. In Jeremiah’s time, many struggled to hear the voice of the Lord, because what He was saying was contradictory to what they felt was best to do. God told them to surrender to the babylonians, for instance, and many felt that was wrong, or even sacrilegious. Still, God told them His thoughts, and that they would be spared, if they did.
Being able to differentiate our best thoughts, from His, is a crucial skill these days. For God always communicates clearly in times of great change. So, we must be able to tell the difference between our thoughts and what He is communicating. He likes our thoughts, but they are not His. Seek His, they will inform and enlighten ours.
Also, there are teacherly voices and there are prophetic voices. Being able to tell the difference allows you to plant the seeds they each carry in a wiser way. When someone is teaching, they are instructing and bringing clarity around and issue. When someone is prophesying, they are imparting and expressing an idea of God; usually one He is speaking now, or into the future.
These are unique modalities in the Spirit, and it is helpful to discern which is which. Especially in our times, when information is sped up. We need to discern the mode of communication, so we know how to receive it, interpret it, and act on it.
There are, what I could call, prophets of the soul. They are proclaiming their own best ideas. But true prophets, are concerned with the thoughts of God, and downloading those. You can sense the difference. God enjoys our soul’s thoughts, but they are not as high as His.
Teacherly voices versus prophetic voices are an important distinction for our times. His sheep hear His Voice, and can tell whether He is teaching or prophesying because they know the Good Shepherd who never leaves His sheep.
As an example, I hear Him saying three things in our times: don’t be afraid, draw near to God, and pray for those who are being prepared in Him. These three all lead into His Ways of caring for His People, preparing for His Future, and our humility required in and by the act of prayer etc. Now, if I were to teach you how to not be afraid, draw near, and pray; i would need to break each down. To not fear, is to practice faith, and claim the truths into each area; to draw near requires spiritual disciplines or prayer, study, fellowship etc; to pray for others, requires us being with the part of Jesus which ever lives to make intercession, we get to be little co-priest, and in this case pray specifically for those leaders He is preparing Himself in, for the next chapters…
So, there is a difference between teaching and prophecy. It’s good to know which is which in Him. This is especially true in times of great interpretive confusion. God is not the author of confusion! So we can hear Him clearly and let His Spirit both teach, or lead us into all truth; and prophecy, to instruct, comfort and warn us directly. Let us grow in this discernment for His Name’s sake, in our day. God’s thoughts and ways are always a little shocking to us. But they are knowable to the degree we are getting to know Him.
Know again the difference between prophecy and teaching. Know when you are doing each. Teaching tends to clarify and put things in order; prophecy cuts and imparts. They are unique ministries of God. Both are needed; but we also need to know when we are doing each.

journal observations from Antwerp: harvesting gleanings!

In Belgium,
As they get old they talk very close to one another. They lean in for emphasis and that is most often enough to make the point. Less hype, more being fully with. It’s a conversational nation. In some nations the space between things creates identity, here proximity is king. How physically close I am to you as we talk is over half the content. Americans tend to like to shout from across the house. Here, you come into the room with the person with whom you want to turn with or con (with) vers (Latin for turn as in reversal). Nice simple cultural observations in travel.

Simple observations today from a local pub.
The old man stacks and re-stacks the newspapers, after the drunk moves one, disheveling them for others. The elder, with shaky hands, carefully places the coasters and papers in their proper propped up order, revealing to us all of today’s headlines; it’s his domain which is left for him-to keep, at least, that much order, so we can see clearly. To straighten out the papers of his local pub. And everyone let’s him. As we should. Life’s tasks simplify at the end.

Ladies enjoying high tea in the lobby of Hilton. That was a fine trip actually. Lord thanks. I wish I’d have recorded it better. A couple of interviews with Sasha would’ve been cool. I’ve a gift there.
Take it easy today.
You got it.

Socks and shirt. Nothing else. Move to ca.

As it says on the back of one of my favorite James Joyce’s books (short story collage collection called, Dubliners) : “ordinary lives and the moments which make them extra-ordinary.” All of us both.
You alright then? I’ll have a look at the bank fer playing. You alright today? Talking to his dog. Just wait, things will get better. Come here. Inf need to take care of ya.
I
Like
To linger
A little
Past time.

I liked her fingers
In rain
That much I remember
And the way her lips formed
When she said
Jesus.

In the James river that summer
I was showing her everything
I knew by then.
We spun in water circles
In that river in thick summer
All the seeds went into the muddy water
Floating somewhere unseen
Beneath us. Probably upstream.

Julio’s house
The house was centered around a tree back then
Before he died
He promised to help
Bring the forest home. The garden into the center
Of the city. Whether he started to
Or not,
It was the warmest home
I’ve known.

Came across this in my journal today, written to some fatherly friends…

To Dave and Merton:

(and other, like fathers)
To be a father, you said
Is to go deeper into the forest first-

to create and become a clearing
for others to walk into, more easily. To love
like that, in that way is

the task of fatherhood, you say.

To become a way, to be

a tall clearing
for others to see the trees by from within
the woods.

Love went further than us all, into
That forest, I thought. As did you
friend and Father. Thanks, it’s all
Clear in here. I can clearly see each leaf now forming uniquely.

The gospel according to St John (in a nutshell!)

The gospel of John starts with the idea that God is relational-ie that The Word was with…
then centers in a spirituality of entering into His relationship with Himself (Jesus’ prayer for oneness in chapter 17) This relationship is characterized by Love, Life, and Light. That’s his gospel in a nutshell. To be caught up in union with that grand relational loving friendship between God and His Son, is our true home.

What we talk about when we talk about healing…

What the healing process is:
All transformation starts with admitting weakness and sin. For all have fallen short of God’s glory, and need help. All healing begins with Jesus’ question to the lame man: “Do you want to be healed?” If so, admit you need it. From there the healing process is a matter of uncovering wounds and hurt areas, confessing our sins, and forgiving others for sinning against us, and letting Jesus enter those areas, and apply His Life and truths into them. Then there is walking out in new ways based on truths which speak into these wounded areas. We in this process are being made more in Christ, therefore more whole.
The Holy Spirit guides the process of healing, by convicting us of our sins, and allowing us to forgive others based on the Cross, or work which Jesus did. This is the healing process in a nutshell.
As a facilitator of healing, you are inviting the Holy Spirit to be present in prayer and direct the person to what needs to be touched by Jesus; helping them confess and forgive, and offering them the truths which speak into their need, and help them walk in new life. How these wounded areas, start to speak a new language, as they are healed, and how we walk out a new life in each area. I think art is one way to facilitate , or express this process. Sin, takes us away from God; confession and forgiveness , towards Him—let’s be headed towards Him.

The way and gap of the prophets

The way of the prophets is to hold that gap between the way things are, and how they are meant to be in Him. He assigns people to be aware of that gap, and feel the lament of it. And to pray towards the wholeness, the reconciliation of all things into their true nature and fullness in Him.
There is a constant lament in there. Between again, what is, and what should and will be. And you live there, and try to be priestly in praying that gap. That is the role of prophet. As well as encouraging people and things towards where He is taking them. If you are called as a prophet, you will have this constant gap lament.
For you can see the context things are meant to be happening in, and where they are.
We can only encourage others to the degree we can see them whole, and in their futures. The only way to do that is to see them by and in His Spirit. We speak from that space. And that is where our labor and fellowship with His suffering dwells.

a good day

Poetry of being in today…
today, i talked  Soren Kierkegaard with a local priest,
caught a paper airplane in mid air, and threw it back
tagging a local  daughter’s neck and said, you are special
thanks for throwing that plane my way-we were kids again for second.
i also saw a hawk, which landed on our tree, and
i walked my dogs in wonder of them, and their ways…
i looked into a friend’s eyes with true care and wonder, and meant it,
and felt the wind on my body, mostly my neck and arms, and paused
considering where it came from—the distance wind travels.
It was a good day.

What of how we use our nights?

Favorite quotes today: “Yet our concern is not how to worship in the catacombs but rather how to remain human in the skyscrapers.”
“Religion consist of God’s question
and man’s answer.”
“The night is the time to cry out.
There is darkness in the East and smugness in the West.
What of the night?
What of the night?”
So, let’s not waste our nights, as we are in one globally.
As we are in a sort of collective “Dark night of the soul”, it matters what we do at night!  Enjoying reading “I asked for Wonder”, from Abraham Heschel today!

What we talk about when we talk about love

“What we talk about when we talk about love” Raymond Carver
Praying for my many Muslim friends locally and globally today, and trying to treat others as I would want to be treated. To love others, as I would want to be loved. In other words, trying to be a good student and friend of Jesus in these turbulent times. To emulate and participate in His Heart for one another.
Praying also for the current and future David’s (those leaders moving in His Ways-both men and women) as they seek God’s heart and speak in the clarity, and boldness of truth these days. We need some MLK’s now, and some Dorothy Days. For, The law of love still applies. Maybe even more urgently now.
Love is more than tolerance, it is proactive care, depth listening and tuning into sacrificial  empathy for those who are suffering, it is un-rejecting others in a proactive embrace from the heart, among other things. ( I Corinthians 13 lists the rest of what love implies; let’s actively conjoin with those attributes and attitudes of Christ in our times)). Let’s move in and dwell in the ways of Love’s ways today.
Let’s open the heart’s harbors, allowing Him to tear down the walls of division (within ourselves and our world) and be models of God’s overt overture and boundlessly sacrificial and incarnational love in our particular chapter of the long story. “For God so loved the world…” and so should we. The rest is history. Let’s love in our hour of opportunity on earth. For the tone of love changes the atmosphere, and re-contextualizes the conversation! Love is our practice, and Love still matters. Anyway, praying for our human family today! As we are all cousins.
